In February 2012 Doncaster MBC began an initiative to improve transport operations and reduce the overall cost of transport services.
EDGE public solutions was selected by competitive tender
The EDGE report was completed in April 2012 and identified a range of options for improvement that would deliver savings in the order of £3.0M over three years and reduce the annual revenue cost of the services by over £1.0M per annum. Importantly for the Council, the options were not based on service reduction, but were designed to maintain or enhance services by introducing efficiencies in the way those services are procured and delivered.
The three year change program commenced in November 2012 and is now moving forward on a number of fronts including; passenger transport re-tendering, fleet reduction, control of staff travel, introduction of a pool car scheme and a transport management restructure. An effective project governance process is also in place.
Substantial savings have been achieved to date, significantly ahead of target for this stage of the project.
The improvement options identified in the EDGE report were practical and realistic, and are now being implemented effectively. The on-site team provided by EDGE is competent and knowledgeable and EDGE has resourced the project at a level that has given the project momentum and delivered tangible improvements.

The following three year change program quickly moved us forward on a number of fronts including; passenger transport re-tendering, fleet reduction, control of staff travel, introduction of a pool car scheme and a transport management restructure. Very substantial savings were achieved, over 30% ahead of the agreed stretch targets set at the project start.
The whole partnership had a feel good factor, with excellent governance and milestones hit and exceeded. The on-site team provided by EDGE was extremely competent and knowledgeable as well as being flexible in their approach. The project was resourced at a level that allowed the early delivery and over achievement of the original targets, and didn’t stop there, with the additional delivery of further initiatives and improvements in the closing months.
